How to Reduce Video File Size Without Losing Quality

Learn practical techniques to compress video files for email, web, and storage. Includes browser-based tools that work without uploading.

Video files are large — a single minute of 1080p footage can be 100-200 MB depending on the codec and bitrate. Sharing these files via email, messaging apps, or web uploads often requires significant compression.

The key to good video compression is choosing the right balance between quality and file size. H.264 (AVC) remains the most compatible codec, while H.265 (HEVC) offers 30-50% better compression at the same quality.

Resolution is the biggest factor in file size. Downscaling from 4K to 1080p typically reduces file size by 75%. Going from 1080p to 720p saves another 50%. For email and messaging, 720p is usually more than sufficient.

Frame rate also matters: 60fps video is twice the data of 30fps. Unless you are sharing sports or gaming footage, 30fps is visually smooth and much more compact.

ConvertCraft's Video Compressor handles all of this in your browser. Select your target resolution and quality preset, and the tool delivers an optimized MP4 using FFmpeg WebAssembly — no upload to any server required.
