How to Split Video by Scene

01Upload Your VideoDrop or browse to select a video with distinct scene changes. The engine reads the full file and begins frame-by-frame analysis, computing pixel-level differences between consecutive frames to identify hard cuts and transition boundaries. Works with MP4, WebM, MOV, MKV, and AVI files.

02Set Detection SensitivityAdjust the threshold slider from 0.1 (very sensitive — detects subtle transitions) to 0.9 (conservative — only major cuts). The FFmpeg select filter evaluates scene change scores using the gt(scene,N) expression, which compares the pixel histogram delta between adjacent frames. A score is computed for each frame; frames exceeding the threshold are marked as cut points. The showinfo filter logs each detected scene change with its timestamp for verification.

03Split & DownloadThe engine splits the video at each detected scene boundary, creating individual clips for every scene. Each clip is encoded independently with the selected output resolution. All clips are packaged into a ZIP archive for single-click download, or you can save the ZIP to cloud storage.

Privacy & Security

All video processing happens on ConvertCraft's dedicated VPS infrastructure. Your source file is uploaded over an encrypted connection, analyzed frame-by-frame in memory, and permanently deleted from the server within minutes of completion. Individual scene clips are also deleted after ZIP packaging. No video data is stored, cached, or accessible to third parties.

About Video Split by Scene

Video Split by Scene uses FFmpeg's select filter with the gt(scene,N) expression to perform histogram-based scene detection. Each frame's pixel histogram is compared against the previous frame; when the delta exceeds the threshold N, a cut point is registered. The video is then split using the segment or stream_copy approach at each detected boundary, producing independent clips. The showinfo filter provides timestamps for each detected change, enabling precise verification of split points.

When to use it

Essential for automatically decomposing compilation videos into individual clips, extracting scenes from films or documentaries for review, preparing footage for social media where each scene becomes a separate post, or splitting multi-scene recordings from conferences and events into per-topic segments. Also useful for quality control — reviewing each scene independently for encoding artifacts.

Tips & Tricks

•0.4 is the optimal starting threshold for most content — it catches hard cuts while ignoring minor camera movements and lighting changes.
•Lower the threshold to 0.2–0.3 for fast-paced content like music videos, trailers, and sports highlights where cuts are frequent and subtle.
•Raise the threshold to 0.6–0.7 for content with gradual transitions (dissolves, fades) to avoid false positives from transition effects.
•Each detected scene is re-encoded at the selected resolution, so output file size depends on the number of scenes — more scenes means more individual headers and slightly larger total size.
•For videos with very few scene changes (e.g., a single-take interview), consider using Video Splitter with manual timestamps instead for more precise control.
