How to Reverse Video

01Upload Your VideoDrop any video file into the workspace. The engine reads the full container to index all frame positions and audio sample timestamps before reversal begins. Supported formats include MP4, WebM, MOV, MKV, and AVI.

02Configure & ReverseChoose an output resolution (Original, 1080p, 1440p, or 4K for Pro users) and click Reverse. The engine applies the FFmpeg reverse filter to the video stream and the areverse filter to the audio stream, reordering every frame and audio packet into the opposite chronological order. A full re-encode is required since frame dependencies cannot be preserved in reverse order.

03Download the Reversed FileOnce processing completes, download the reversed MP4. The output maintains the original frame rate, resolution, and audio sample rate. You can also save directly to cloud storage via the Cloud Save button.

Privacy & Security

All video processing happens on ConvertCraft's dedicated VPS infrastructure. Your source file is uploaded over an encrypted connection, fully decoded into memory for reversal, and permanently deleted from the server within minutes. No video data is stored, cached, or accessible to third parties after processing.

About Video Reverse

Video Reverse uses FFmpeg's reverse filter for the video stream and areverse filter for the audio stream to play the entire file backwards. Because B-frames and P-frames reference other frames in temporal order, a full re-encode is mandatory — the engine decodes every frame, reverses the buffer order, and re-encodes to H.264. Memory usage scales linearly with video duration; shorter clips process faster.

When to use it

Use this tool for creative effects like revealing a scene backwards, producing time-rewind transitions in short films, or creating loopable social media content. Also valuable in music video production where reversed footage creates surreal visual effects, or for testing audio processing pipelines with reversed waveforms.

Tips & Tricks

•Reversing long videos (10+ minutes) requires significant server memory since all frames must be decoded into a buffer before reversal — keep clips under 5 minutes for fastest processing.
•Reversed audio sounds uniquely distorted due to reversed phoneme order, making it useful for experimental sound design and music production.
•Combine with Video Speed Change at 0.5× for dramatic slow-reverse effects, or at 2× for fast rewind transitions.
•The output file size may be slightly larger than the original because the reversed frame sequence compresses less efficiently under H.264's temporal prediction model.
•For best results with B-frame heavy source files (e.g., high-quality H.265 HEVC), consider first converting to H.264 using Video Converter to reduce re-encode artifacts.
